Currently residing in the Cincinnati, Ohio area, Mark Russell Mercer is the director of vocal music at Fairfield High School. His duties at Fairfield include directing the Freshman Choir, Mixed Choir, Symphonic Choir, Acapocalypse A Cappella Choir, Pure Elegance Ladies' Show Choir, and Choraliers Mixed Show Choir. He also co-directs Rhythm Express Mixed Show Choir with Ms. Wilkerson at the middle school level.

For his undergraduate work, Mark spent four years studying music education and piano performance at the distinguished University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). He graduated in 2008 with Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. While in attendance, Mark was involved with the CCM Chorale all four years and assisted and music directed musicals and showcases for the prestigious music theatre department. He was lucky enough to work under the direction of many distinguished composers and directors during his time at CCM such as Eric Whitacre and Dale Warland. Mark also studied piano under the accomplished assistant professor of piano and chair of piano, Michael Chertock. Mark finished his graduate work at Kent State University in 2012 with a Masters Degree in Music Education. Since he started, Mark has directed and music directed over 80 theatrical productions and directed over 25 choirs - 10 of them that he started and built himself. He also began the trend-setting New England Show Choir Showdown in Andover, MA that remains a favorite of those who attend and ran the well-respected Midwest Classic in Danville, IL. Mercer has judged at local level theater, show choir competitions, and choral competitions as well as national level show choir competitions. He has been nominated for Best New Director, Most Promising Program, and was the 2015 Teacher of the Year while teaching in Massachusetts.

In 2012, the choirs were chosen to perform for the Ohio School Boards Association and Ohio Music Education Association. In the summer of 2012 the Choraliers show choir were the first show choir division winners in the 7th Annual World Choir Games, and in 2013 they were FAME National Finalists. The ensembles have won countless Grand Champion honors at regional and national events and superior ratings at OMEA events. Mark is excited to become part of the choral legacy at Fairfield High and hopes to help the program grow and find continued success.
